[ARCHIVED] Fatal Traffic Collision - Van Maren Road Near Mercedes Avenue

Community Update

On December 23, 2024, at approximately 9:46 PM, the Citrus Heights Police Department received several 911 calls regarding a collision between a motor vehicle and a bicyclist on Van Maren Road near Mercedes Avenue.   

Officers arrived on the scene and located an injured bicyclist lying on the ground in the roadway. The bicyclist was transported to Mercy San Juan Hospital.  Life-saving measures were attempted. However, the bicyclist was pronounced deceased at the hospital.  The vehicle's driver remained on the scene and cooperated with the investigation.

The cause of the collision is still being investigated. It appears drugs and or alcohol may have played a role in the collision.   The Citrus Heights Police Department’s Traffic Unit and Crime Scene Investigators responded to the scene to investigate the collision. Both northbound and southbound lanes of Van Maren Road between Donegal Drive and Bremen Drive will be closed for a few hours while the collision is investigated.

The identity of the deceased bicyclist is being withheld pending notification of the next of kin by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office.
