[ARCHIVED] Secondary Unit Regulations Prove Successful

ADU

In fall 2017, the City Council adopted new regulations for Accessory Dwelling Units (ADU) – aka granny flat, in-law quarter, or second unit – and has seen an increase in the number of permits issued for ADUs. Some property owners stated their ADU will be used for rental income, while a majority stated the new dwelling will house an aging relative.

ADUs are a relatively affordable type of construction because they do not require purchasing land or major new infrastructure such as sewer and electricity. Some properties may be able to convert existing space, such as a garage, into a new living unit. ADUs are seen as a way to help address the state’s housing challenges by offering more affordable housing option. For additional information, view the Planning Division's webpage.
