In September 2016, the Citrus Heights City Council approved an ordinance that now permits the keeping of hens on residential properties. The changes to allow hen keeping was in response to numerous requests from the community who raise hens mainly for the purpose of providing fresh eggs for their family.
Some of the key regulations for the keeping of hens include:
• Up to 6 hens may be kept on residential properties developed with a single-family home (lots over 10,000 sf are not limited to 6)
• Hens must be in a coop from sunset to sunrise
• Coops may not be closer than 5 feet to a side/rear property line and 20 feet to a neighboring habitable structure
