July 18, 2007 – The Public Garden Committee of the All-America Rose Selections (AARS) recently recognized the Fountain Square rose garden in the Citrus Heights civic center with the 2007 Certificate of Achievement for Outstanding Maintenance.
The prestigious honor is given to only those gardens that surpass AARS's high standards for rose care and presentation – the Fountain Square garden has won the award annually since 1989. AARS said that their “evaluators found the Fountain Square Rose Garden to be in good condition and that the overall condition of the roses was good.”
The Fountain Square garden was planted in 1979 and is one of 130 AARS-accredited public rose gardens. During the year, judges make several unannounced visits to the gardens to check on the roses and to appraise the care of the plants. The Fountain Square garden has more than 5,000 roses and includes AARS' new award-winning roses as well as old favorites. In addition, three new roses are being tested for 2008.
The rose garden is managed and coordinated by Christopher Myers, Facility & Grounds Supervisor for the City of Citrus Heights.
The public is invited to visit the rose garden when the City offices are open: Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Fountain Square complex is located at 6237 Fountain Square Drive, at the corner of Greenback Lane and Fountain Square.
