What's New at the Garden?
The Sylvan Ranch Community Garden held its first members meeting this past Saturday, June 20th. The meeting was followed by a work day where the members started creating the ADA accessible pathways through the garden. Pathway materials were provided to the garden at a significant discount by Granite Crete, a LEED certified company.
The members also started planting our pumpkin patch in the Phase II area of the garden. "We felt it was important to plant something in the second phase area to get the soil healthy and provide a benefit to the community" said Cheryl Bennett, President of the SRCG. Since the soil is a very heavy red clay, members dug down as far as possible and then used recycled tires donated by Les Schwab Tires at 8001 Greenback Lane to create planters for the pumpkin patch. The tires were filled with compost provided by Allied Waste and will be planted with pumpkin seeds by some of the youth members of the garden soon!
What is a Community Garden?
It can be urban, suburban, or rural. It can grow flowers, vegetables or community. It can be one community plot, or can be many individual plots. It can be at a school, hospital, or in a neighborhood. It can also be a series of plots dedicated to "urban agriculture" where the produce is grown for a market.
