Be Storm Ready & Disaster Preparedness

During heavy downpours, we will likely see some localized street flooding, which will subside as the water dissipates into the storm drains and creeks. If you see street flooding in the absence of a heavy downpour, please contact General Services at 916-727-4770.

Sandbag Information

Citrus Heights provides sandbags for CITRUS HEIGHTS RESIDENTS ONLY. Please bring proof of residency (such as ID or utility bill) when you come to pick up sandbags. If you do not live in Citrus Heights, please contact your local agency (City of Roseville, Sacramento County, Placer County, etc.) for sandbag information.

Citrus Heights residents may come to City Hall at 6360 Fountain Square Drive during normal business hours (M-F, 8-5), to pick up sandbags to be self-filled at the following the locations:

  • C-Bar-C Park (8275 Oak Avenue)
  • City Hall located at 6360 Fountain Square Drive

The City will provide sand at these two locations throughout the 2021-2022 storm season. We strongly encourage residents who have experienced flooding in the past to prepare well in advance of the expected rainfall this year. Please bring your own shovel to fill your bags at the sand locations.

The City encourages residents to limit the quantity of bags to the amount they can safely transport in their vehicles. The filled sandbags weigh approximately 30 pounds each (filled halfway). More than 10 bags is too much weight for most cars; and 20 bags is generally the limit a half-ton pickup truck can safely transport.

Special Note regarding COVID-19 precautions: City Hall is closed to the public Mondays and Fridays, but we still want to provide sandbags to residents who need them. When you come to City Hall to pick up sand bags:

  • Wear a mask or face covering
  • Park near the fountain and call the front desk at 916-725-2448
  • The receptionist will tell you where to meet to get your sandbags
  • Sand filling stations are self-serve only, there are no staff available to help with filling bags or loading vehicles
  • Bring your own shovel, the city will not provide shovels for residents to use
  • Maintain at least 6 feet of distance from other people when using the sand filling station

This information may change, subject to sand and sandbag availability.

Residents may also contact local home improvement stores to purchase sand and sandbags. You can download instructions for sandbag filling and laying (PDF). For additional information or questions, please contact the General Services Department at 916-727-4770 or email General Services.

Keep Storm Drains Clear

Debris such as leaves and twigs can prevent water from flowing from gutters into storm drains and cause localized flooding. To prevent clogged drains, properly dispose of yard waste in your green waste bin. You may contact Republic Services to request an additional green waste container (residential customers are allowed 1 additional free green waste or mixed recycling container). Additionally, Citrus Heights residential customers may set out up to six extra bags of leaves curbside with your regularly scheduled green waste pickup at no extra charge during the months of November, December, and January.

If you see a clogged storm drain, please contact the General Services Department at 916-727-4770. Due to the volume of calls, there is limited staff available during a storm event. If safe, you may attempt to remove the debris with a garden rake. Current radar images of rainfall in the Sacramento region are available from the National Weather Service (NWS).
